The Indie Scene: Breaking The Glass

by Cedric Joshua Martinez

Independent Films "Indie Films" as defined by our bros in the asanda2filmstudies.blogspot.com (http://asanda2filmstudies.blogspot.com/2008/09/independent-films-definition.html) are films that are initially produced without financing from a major film studio.

Lately, Indie films in the Philippines are reaching out to the people as well as collecting numerous awards both here and abroad. Nevertheless, what are the possible reasons behind these? Here are my personal insights regarding the success of the Indie Films:

1. Indie films are not after the sales, they are after the story.
Most of the time, social issues and concerns are at the core of an indie film story which I very much different from the local mainstream movies. While the indies give us a glimpse of the reality, mainstream movies feed us with fantasy, imagination and romantic clichés.

2. They are limited in terms of budget.
Curious isn’t it? How does a limited budget contribute to the success of independent films? Simple. Independent filmmakers are forced to think outside the box. Thus, they are becoming more innovative in using the resources that they have, from the simple camera tricks, use of prosthetic up to the editing. They are discovering new and much more effective ways in making an indie film.

3. Indie Films are Independent
Being independent comes with many challenges, and perks. For filmmakers, this independence release them from the control of production companies and their standards. This gives them, especially the Director, much more control and opportunity to display what he or she would want to show to the audience.

4. Actors and Actresses work for the honor.
In spite of the low budget, we ask ourselves “Why is ___________ in this film? If I could remember __ has a very high talent fee.” The answer lies in the awards that they receive in the Philippines and overseas. Aside from which, they would also like to work with top directors like Brilliante Mendoza.

5. Indie Films give us the reality at the silver screen.
Philippine independent films give us insights and present to us the reality that is happening out there. And for me, that is the beauty of indie films. It is not only there in order to entertain us but to shake us up and open our eyes. By the end of every movie, questions are always being asked. What am I going to do know that I am aware of it? Am I experiencing the same thing? What can I do about it? This is the beauty of independent films, they are not just a work of art but more than that, they are stories of the people, our stories.

Party 'Til Morning

A Filipino man is no doubt one of the best beer drinkers in the world. They can withstand the massive effects of being drunk and doesn’t get affected by the “Hang over.” In Philippines, it is the beer and not the dog, who’s the man’s best friend. It is their escape route from the rude world. From the friend zoned guy, up to the tired husband, beer is the companion that any many of the bros can trust. It will listen to their endless miseries and will not comment anything bad about it.

That is why; a Filipino beer company introduces a fest that will rock the world of any Filipino beer drinkers, the San Miguel Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest is an annual beer fest that makes our Bros happy and drunk. On September 28 at the Asena City in Macapagal Boulevard, Paranaque City, beer market leader San Miguel Brewery Inc. kicks off the country’s much awaited, grandest and biggest beer festival, the San Miguel Oktoberfest 2012.

According to SMB President Roberto N. Huang, This year’s “Beer Festival” focuses on the relevant elements that are sure to delight every San Miguel Beer customer who anticipates the Annual San Miguel Oktoberfest. The idea, Huang said, is to “bring to the customer what the customer really wants in a beer festival, without a fuss, and with variety of choices in one grand venue for celebration.

There are six tents to choose from for our bros, the tents are specifically organized based on what the customer wants and their preference on drinking their own glass of cold beer. There are also celebrities and bands that will rock the night of the attendees.

At the Oktoberfest night, nothing is for sure except for one, every bros will get rocked and drunk.

Chicken Soup for the Soul

by Jhuwen Balite

As a student, I have many goals in my life. But the pressure from the school and in the house makes me think if I can achieve my dreams. People nowadays especially in Philippines are weak and tend to give up early on their dreams because of financial problems that hinder them to continue dreaming. Filipinos become more realistic in dreaming and setting their goals, because of the pressure and lack of motivation. That is why we really need to have an inspiration, someone or something that will motivate us and uplift us in the brink of being stubborn.
Recently I have read a book that focuses on inspiring and motivating people that needs to get uplift, it is entitled “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” The book is a part of series which is made from compilation of stories from the authors and people who have experienced amazing things that changed their lives for good. Internationally known speakers Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield are the authors of the book. Both are inspirational and motivational speaker who aims to change the lives of people and uplift their soul.

Chicken Soup for the Soul was released on June 28, 1993, and became a holiday favorite by the end of December. What drove initial interest was not media attention or celebrity endorsement, but rather word-of-mouth promotion from ordinary people around the country who bought the book and loved it. Many would return to the bookstore to buy five or ten copies for friends and family. Thanks to that groundswell of popularity, by September of 1994, Chicken Soup for the Soul was on every major bestseller list in the U.S. and Canada. Although the media may not have led the charge, they soon caught on. Chicken Soup for the Soul received coverage from just about every major media outlet in the country, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Today Show,” “Larry King Live” and thousands of others. The series quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, receiving mentions on television programs like “Friends,” “The Sopranos,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” plus several movies. According to (http://www.chickensoup.com)

This book is recommended by me for those people especially our “Bros” who are in need of motivation and guidance. Surely everyone who will read this book will be uplifted and will definitely strive to achieve their goals. Motivation and inspiration is a factor in achieving our dreams, but let us not forget that it is God who’s responsible for our being and our companion in our way to our success.

Sensational Mind

by Jasper Noel Barba

Storyline:
The book is about Ana who has just finished college and is about to find a work experience place. She meets an extremely rich man, Christian Grey, who is only 27 but very dominant and controlling. He’s also very handsome, and she can’t help being attracted to him. Turns out he is attracted to her, too. But he’s never had a proper relationship. His previous relationships have all been on his terms with the woman either agreeing to these terms, or being dumped.
But Ana is different. He says he will drop her if she doesn’t agree to do things his way, but she isn’t sure she wants his sort of relationship, involving mainly S/M sex. She hasn’t really had a boyfriend before so what she wants is a normal relationship. The remainder of the book involves bargaining for the kind of relationship they might have. She has a taste of his idea of a relationship, and he gets a taste of what she wants. Will Ana be the woman who can make him change his attitude?
During the book Ana finds out about Christian’s dark past. A lot has happened to make him the person he is now. She uncovers only some of it, but it helps her understand him better.

Review:

The Fifty Shades of Grey is this year’s fastest selling paperback in history as I see. I thought reading this book was so boring that it would make me feel awful buying it. And it didn’t, it was very intense reading it and I learned something about the story even though it was quite offending for some women. The book

Ink for a Lifetime

by Fil-maur Louis Nacion

“One criteria of being a true MAN is when you can stand on pain—have a tattoo”
It might seem like everyone, from rich to famous, from teens to grandfathers and from poor to obscure, have a tattoo or is planning to get one soon, but you shouldn't get a tattoo simply because it is "in" nowadays or just to prove that you are not afraid of having one. Tattoo is beautiful, artistic and “astig” but I’m telling you, TATTOOS ARE FOR LIFE. You cannot removed it anytime you want, the only way to have a tattoo safely removed is to go to a doctor and have it removed with a laser, and even then, it will leave a scar where the tattoo used to be. If you want a tattoo, THINK BEFORE YOU INK.

“Self expression, art, beauty and style” Getting a tattoo is a popular way to show off this elements of your own life. Tattoos are available in many colors or plain black, and designs span far beyond the realm of your own imagination. If you can draw it, a tattoo artist can most likely reproduce it on your body. Words, pictures, objects, and abstract designs are just a few of possible designs. If you can’t quite make up your mind, they’ve got books with thousands of options for the perfect tattoo to suit you. Also, symbolism runs deep in many tattoos, even Chinese letters, kanji and hieroglyphics are used mostly as designs. Sometimes, you can even choose to create a symbolic design of which only “you” knows the true meaning. Selecting from these and countless other tattoo designs allows for a satisfying sense of self expression.

On the other hand, having a tattoo also has its cons. People with multiple tattoos are often stereotyped as being bad, outcasts or criminals, to the point that the word “discrimination” comes along. It often happens on instances like applying for a job, riding a jeepney or even simply just walking on your own street because most people think you’re a criminal, right? Also, persons with tattoo are not allowed to donate blood within one year because they are assuring that you did not acquire anydiseases when you had tattoo. These are some consequences but there are many more dude.

Having a tattoo is painful, really painful, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that if you have one you’re strong. It is just a way of expressing. So, if you planning to have one be sure that you will love it.

A Sitcom that is a Legen- wait for it- dary! Legendary!

by Radel F. Llagas

“The world is full of incomprehensible words”, as Future Ted had quoted in a hilarious sitcom entitled How I Met Your Mother, and now I think my words are not enough to explain how this epic sitcom lasts for almost seven years and counting because of its upcoming 8th season.

The show was started on September 19, 2005 at CBS starring Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen, Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatski, Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson and continuously teaches its viewers moral values with a touch of comedy. It is the story of Ted telling his son and daughter how he met their mother and his search in the big city of New York with the aid of his four best friends Marshall, Lily, Robin, and Barney and their funny and snappy misadventures.

I think this entertaining and quirky sitcom are meant for young professionals and college students or generally for young adults because of its theme focused on love and relationships, with sexual-themed humor and other things that only adults can grasp. Despite this, we can say that the strong point of this witty comedy is the chemistry between the five main characters it’s like they were real-life best friends when you watch them in the show and what this quintet experiencing might also reflect to the viewers.

All thanks to its creators Craig Thomas and Cater Bays who don’t let us down in their epic show for every episode that they produce, no wonder it has been a critical success and has received consistently positive reviews throughout its run.

As Future Ted was saying, the world is full of incomprehensible words. There are a lot of things I want to say in this article but I’m just overwhelmed that this snappy sitcom is one of the best in the world and everyone should have a chance to watch it because this sitcom is a must see or a requirement before you leave the world, just kidding. All I want to say is if you still haven’t watched this epic sitcom, you better watch now because this will be Legen – wait for it –dary! Legendary!
